The U.S.S. Langley was the first aircraft carrier built by the Navy. It was actually the old collier, Jupiter, refitted with a flight deck. The ship had no stabilizers as modern aircraft carriers do, and the flight deck pitched and rolled with the sea swells. Nevertheless, Godfrey Chevalier was the first pilot to successfully land an airplane on the deck of this moving ship.
